I have been an educator for over 25 years, and am currently teaching AP Macroeconomics and Economics.
In my experience, most students come into social studies courses with something less than enthusiasm for the subject. However, I heard a lady say not long ago, "I hated social studies in school until I graduated, and then I discovered that everything I do in life is social studies."
In my courses, I encourage students to challenge their personal assumptions and beliefs, to challenge their own opinions and thinking, in order to enable them to engage in their communities in a more informed and constructive manner. Economics is the study of the distribution of scarce resources, and in my class we not only learn how resources are distributed, but we question and seek to discover why resources are distributed as they are. Economics impacts our lives in powerful and deeply personal ways. I look forward to helping my students to think deeply and critically about the very tumultuous times we are living through.
I hereby pledge my support for the goal and principles of anti-racism education, and will work towards eliminating racism from our schools and society as a whole. As an educator and an ally, I will strive for equity for all at Akins Early College High School.
