I have been an educator for over 20 years, and am currently teaching AP Macroeconomics and Economics.
In my experience, most students come into social studies courses with something less than enthusiasm for the subject. However, I heard a lady say not long ago, "I hated social studies in school until I graduated, and then I discovered that everything I do in life is social studies."
Social studies courses allow students to really learn to think for themselves. They should challenge their personal assumptions and beliefs, challenge their opinions and thinking, and enable them to engage in their communities in a more informed and constructive manner. Economics impacts our lives in powerful and deeply personal ways. I look forward to helping my students to think deeply and critically about the very tumultuous times we are living through.
