Lora Alaniz, a Mexican-American native of South Texas (b. 1967), is a first generation college graduate from University of Arizona and is a certified educator. Before joining the Austin ISD Career Tech Education program, she managed over a dozen clubGEN afterschool programs for GENaustin for five years, served as an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) with College Forward and taught art in Tucson, Arizona for over seven years before returning to Austin. Her teaching experience is focused within disadvantaged communities, where she helped develop socially and politically relevant curriculum to meet the needs of at-risk youth. Outside of academia, she is a passionate visual artist. Her artwork has been exhibited most recently at People’s Gallery Austin City Hall, Tucson Museum of Art, Texas Tech University, Arizona University, California College of the Arts PlaySpace, Arroyo Arts Collective in Los Angeles, Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater in New York, and the Prenelle Gallery in London.
