STEM Opportunities & Community Partnerships

The Akins STEM Academy has many partnerships with higher education and with industry leaders. We have an advisory board, the Texas-STEM Industry Leadership Council. The T-STEM ILC meets multiple times throughout the school year and includes many of the industry leaders listed below. If you would like more information about the ILC or would like to join to help support our STEM programs, please contact the STEM Academy Coordinator Christina Dost at christina.dost@austinisd.org. Thank you to all of our community partners for helping make our STEM programs flourish!

Code2College provides 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders across Central Texas the opportunity to learn to code. The Code2College application process for Spring 2021 is open now and students meet virtually twice per week throughout the year. After completing the program, students have a chance to be placed in summer internships including internships at Favor Delivery, Google, and Indeed to name a few. Go to this website for more information and to apply. See the STEM Academy Coordinator, Christina Dost, with any questions.
ChickTech is a non profit organization providing girls across the country the opportunity to get involved with technology through workshops and mentorships. Girls are nominated by their school to participate and meet once monthly throughout the school year. We have had many Akins students participate in ChickTech the last few years. If you are interested in ChickTech, go to this website.

University of Texas OnRamps is a program through UT Austin. Students in the Biomedical Engineering Major have the opportunity to take the Project-Based Research course and earn college credit at any public institution in the state of Texas. For more information about the program and college credit, see Dr. Laura Govea.
EcoRise is a national organization that provides curriculum to schools in an effort to educate young people about environmental sustainability. EcoRise has partnered with Akins the last two school years. Students in many of the engineering classes will learn how to design a sustainable future and students in our Sustainable Building Internship will use EcoRise curriculum to help prepare them to become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED provides building owners and operators a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. LEED is an internationally recognized certification for architects and buildings alike. You'll notice buildings becoming LEED certified all over Austin! We are proud to offer LEED certification preparation and practice in our Sustainable Building Internship! See the STEM Academy Coordinator, Christina Dost, with any questions.
