English 1 Pre-AP

Mr. Martinez was originally born in Mexico. His family moved to the United States when he was eight years old. He attended Harris Elementary School, Martin Middle School, and eventually Eastside Memorial High School. Throughout his education, but especially at Eastside Memorial, Mr. Martinez had teachers who nurtured his talents and pushed his thinking. At Eastside Memorial he participated in the Early College program with a cohort of students who split their time between the Eastside campus and ACC Riverside. After graduating as the valedictorian of his class, Mr. Martinez attended The University of Texas at Austin. He graduated in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in English Literature and a teaching certificate from the College of Liberal Art's UTeach program. Thanks to the Early College program, Mr. Martinez graduated early from college, becoming the first person in his family to earn a degree.

After graduating Mr. Martinez accepted a position as an 8th ELA teacher at Mendez Middle School. Mr. Martinez worked at Mendez for 3 years, teaching classes of students ranging from those new to the country to those taking English 1 at the middle school level. The connection he formed with the students and families from the Dove Springs Community has been a driving force behind his teaching philosophy since then.

Mr. Martinez was fascinated by language and its many complexities from a young age and continues to be fascinated by its connection to one's identity today. He believes that all students can achieve great things if they are given the right tools and the right environment to learn. As a member of the inaugural ECHS academy at Akins, Mr. Martinez hopes to offer students a rigorous academic environment where their voices will be heard, their perspectives challenges, and their sense of citizenship at the local, national, and global scale established.

When he is not teaching, Mr. Martinez enjoys reading, trying out new restaurants around the city, and taking his dog Ricardo out for walks.
